Welcome back to the Chinese class at Oak! I am the Chinese teacher for Grade8 this year. The following is the brief information for Grade8 Chinese.
Objectives:
This course is designed to focus on communication through the development of the four language skills: listening, speaking, reading and writing. Practice is the key to success in this course. Emphasis will be placed on accurate pronunciation, correct usage of the sentence structures and being able to listen, respond and ask questions. In addition to learning the language, we’ll also explore culture through carious activities throughout the year. Students will be assessed in the following standards: Speaking, Listening, Reading, Writing and Culture.
By the completion of this course, the successful student will be able to (but not limit to):

Absence:
If a student is absent from school, he/she will be given the appropriate amount of time to make up the work in accordance with the student handbook.
Standards-based grading applies to foreign language classes. Student achievement of foreign language standards is measured through class participation, class work, homework, projects and assignment. Students will be assessed in the following standards: Speaking, Listening, Reading, Writing and Culture.
Required Daily Supplies:
· Bring iPad to record assignments and due dates
· A 3-ring binder with all class handouts, notes, assignments, tests, quizzes, etc.
· Notebook for class notes
· Sharpened pencils with erasers
· Blue or black pens
· A highlighter
· A pen of another color (red, green, purple, etc.) for in-class corrections
Technology:
In addition to our regular classroom activities, we will be using the iPad to help you practice and further develop the various skills that you are learning in the classroom. I have a website which is a supplemental resource for you. This website is updated regularly and provides activities that support and enrich your Chinese learning experience. A monthly newsletter will be posted there. You can access the website by clicking on my name in the Faculty Pages on the Oak webpage. The address of our class website can also be found at the bottom of this letter. All technology requires that students understand and abide by the Technology Acceptable Usage Guidelines that have been put in place by the district and this website is no different.

- Invite a friend to one’s house or visit a friend’s house
- Express and ask one’s address
- Make phone calls
- Send a note/letter to a friend
- Talk about weathers and seasons
- Listen to a weather broadcast
- Talk about school life, including class schedule, buildings and friends
- Communicate about illness, including symptoms, following medicine instructions
- Express travel plans, including travel preparation and reading travel itineraries
Expectations:
- Arrive to classroom on time with the required materials unless you are otherwise directed.
- Attend to personal needs before coming to class.
- Do not eat candies or other food during class unless you have been given special permission.
- Actively participate in all class activities. Talk only when permitted.
- Complete all assignments and turn them in on time. Students are responsible for recording assignments and marking due dates in their planners when the class meets. Ask for clarification of an assignment prior to leaving the classroom if you do not understand its directions. If a student doesn’t have his/ her homework when it is due, he/she will receive a notice that needs to be signed by a parent.
- Respect your teacher, classmates and all others belongings.
- If a student has difficulties with behavior, I will ask them to fill out a problem-solving form to come up with a solution to the problem. Chronic problems or severe misbehavior will need to be handled with more specific consequences. I will let parents know immediately if a student is having severe problems with behavior at school.
Absence:
If a student is absent from school, he/she will be given the appropriate amount of time to make up the work in accordance with the student handbook.
- Students are responsible for retrieving all handouts and assignments missed while absent from Chinese class and turning them in for credit.
- Students should also check our class website to find they have missed.
